Stephen King - HORROR master
This blog's gonna be different from my regular ones. I mostly talk about what I've learned from my daily life. Today, I'm going to talk about the master of horror.
I've read Stephen King's writings previously. I never used to understand horror. I am in no condition to judge horror books, cause I haven't read many. Yet, I read "The Shining" which is considered the gold standard of horror, and it was fine. Some parts of it scary, yes, but overall the story telling is excellent and horror factor was fine. I enjoyed it none the less.
Three days ago, I started "Pet Sematary". I started this book cause one of my colleagues mentioned this one to be the best, and I just completed another book. So I wanted a safer bet which I knew the writing will be good, so I can enjoy the book for next couple of days.
400+ pages completed in three days. That's a record for me. This is no ordinary book. First thing, I don't read books the whole day. I just can't. Cause I generally have other stuff to do. But I had couple of full days for myself and I got hold of this book.
I read this book for hours. I didn't even know that I could read for so long. I tried to do the same thing that I did with other books; read a chapter and put it aside to follow it up later. This one, I couldn't. The moment I put this book aside, my mind stopped working. I used to hold my phone in my hand for couple of minutes not know what's running on the screen, dazed about the story of the book, rerunning the whole story again and again. The book slowly whispered into my mind all the time that it's waiting to be held and read.
I couldn't read it at night though. The drive was still there at night, but the story was too scary for me to hold. It came to a point where I looked at the book closed and the hair stood up on the back of my neck. However strong the drive to read, the fear just held back strong.
It had come to a point of madness. It's late in the night and everyone's sleeping at home. I wake up to go have a glass of water. I generally don't turn on all the lights at home for that, so I turned on the light in my bedroom and walked to kitchen in the gloom of that light to have water. While I was walking back, I see the reflection of me in the mirror. Light from bedroom creating a silhouette of me in the mirror. Yes I get scared of these kind of things and walk faster to my room. But not now. I stopped and contemplated if my image is going to move in the mirror even if I don't. This book messed with my thoughts so badly.
And I loved reading it. Ok! That's countering the above paragraph, but it had been so long since I have stuck to a story for days. As I've already said, it whispers. Most of it is because of the writing. Stephen King writes it in such a detail that you get to live every single moment. You get to experience the weather, the memories, the emotions of the characters in the book.
If you want to read horror, this is your first choice. Read it. Even if you don't enjoy the scares, the story is intricate enough to hold you back.
