WEEK-IN #8

Most of us lack the below quality, and that feeds onto our time and health. It’s tough, but needed.

Rejection

I’m not talking about you having to eat veggies for meal and you say NO (That’s straightforward. I’d say NO to veggies all day everyday). I’m talking about the work you get and your pride’s at stake. That’s a war. You don’t like to do it, but you also don’t like to reject something a person had trusted you with. You crumble internally every single time.

Of course, there a boatload of books on this topic explaining Why, How and When to say NO. As I’m lazy (as always), I’ll try to bring out a short answer from my past experiences. As always, this might not work for everyone, but most can relate and try it out.

My go-to would always be to pick the one I’d love to do, and say NO to the other. Let’s say if it’s Badminton or Cricket. That’s a NO to cricket for me (Ahh! wait wait.. I’m not so good at cricket. Don’t assume that I hate cricket). That was simple, right? But, the real problem arises when there’s a long term result for one and a short term result for the other. Something like a movie vs a lecture. Or between two long term results like, job in an MNC or in a Startup. Now, picking one between two short term results or two long term results comes under my previous week’s blog Confusion, cause both the choices are of same category. I’m talking here about the choices with two different categories. A long term and a short term.

This is a hell lot harder cause short term results mostly in Temporary satisfaction and long term results mostly in Career growth. You just can’t blindly pick the long term option every single time cause you are gonna loose the emotional balance. You also can’t pick the short term all the time cause, watching movies every single day is not gonna bring you any good.

Here too, you’ll have to search for the balance between the two. Worked on your project for two weeks straight? Go watch a movie now. Watched a series for two weeks straight? Go join an Asylum (That’s a joke. Don’t watch for two weeks straight). You keep doing one for long, pick the other. That’s a reset. And, picking the short term result more or the long term depends on how you absorb information. Some have to read all day to understand the context. While some can grasp everything in an hour or two. Understand your state, and start picking accordingly.
